A Swedish massage is a gentle, full-body massage that relaxes and soothes, loosens up your muscles, and provides stress relief. If you’re looking to dip your toe into the world of therapeutic massage, a Swedish massage is a great place to start. A Swedish massage is a feel-good treatment that leaves you feeling energized and calm. It makes a fabulous first massage, since it’s a lot gentler than some of the other therapeutic techniques we offer at Massage Quest, such as deep tissue massage or cupping.
If you do have an area of your body that feels particularly tense, such as your neck or your lower back, your practitioner can spend more time on this area—but if it’s a serious concern we’d recommend trying deep tissue massage or a sports massage instead.
During the massage, your practitioner will massage your muscles, joints, tendons, vessels, and ligaments using strokes toward the heart, in order to improve blood circulation.
Your therapist will use various different massage techniques to promote healing, such as circular or gliding strokes, kneading, tapping, rolling, drumming, or vibrating/shaking.
Massage in general is an effective stress relief method. It’s a wonderful way to relax, rewind, and rejuvenate, whether you’re overworked, looking to relieve muscle tension, or just feel like a moment to yourself in this busy world. Benefits include:
● Reduces tension
● Alleviates pain and discomfort
● Stimulates nerve
● Drains excess lymph
● Improves flexibility
Swedish massage can help with:
● Back pain
● Headaches
● Chronic pain
● Anxiety
● Stress
Before your Swedish massage, your therapist will talk to you to find out how you’re feeling and build a connection. Now’s the time to let your therapist know if there’s anything they need to know about, such as pregnancy, joint problems, or illness.
You’ll then undress, usually down to your underwear, but only if you’re comfortable with this. The Swedish massage will usually start with you lying on your back or front, then you’ll flip over to the other side halfway through. A sheet will cover you to protect your modesty.
To begin the massage, your therapist will apply warm massage oil or lotion to your skin and their hands. This reduces friction on your skin as the massage progresses.
